The Rise of Propolis
Posted by Heather Stewart onSo we’ve talked about honey, but there is another important ingredient that everyone needs to know about – Propolis. Propolis is a sticky, resinous substance made by bees that is used all over the world, specifically European and Asian countries, and is found in small quantities of honey. Like honey, this somewhat lesser known product is used for a variety of things such as medical remedies, skincare products, chewing gum, and even car wax. The survival rate of honeybees is higher thanks to propolis, as bees use this to insulate their hives, seal alternate entrances in case their hives are being ambushed, and to prevent diseases and such from entering the hive.
Propolis is generally dark brown in color, but seeing green, red, black, and white hues are not uncommon. It all depends on the sources of resin found in the hive area. Honeybees are opportunists, so they take resin material from anything that is available in their area.
The resins that make up propolis have natural properties that can help heal wounds and burns, and is a natural remedy for various ailments such as acne, sore throats, canker sores, itching, cancer, and tuberculosis, much like honey. Many studies have been conducted to see how propolis can be used for dental pain and tooth enamel hardener, infections, inflammatory diseases, and genital herpes. Even though these studies haven’t yielded any significant results propolis is definitely safe to use as a home remedy. Local propolis, like honey, can help allergy symptoms but it is not recommended if you have any reaction or sensitivity to bees or bee products. While skincare products containing propolis can have a very positive effect on your skin, don’t use it if you may be allergic to bees.
Because of all the studies about the properties, propolis has been gaining popularity slowly but surely, as more and more people become educated. Today, you can buy it raw in many forms such as tablets, lozenges, and powders. Products containing propolis are often in the form of creams, lotions, and other skincare products. While these products can be found in specialty health/natural food stores, they are much easier to find and buy online. Be sure to get some to keep on hand in your medicine cabinet or bathroom drawer, because there’s nothing better than purely natural remedies, especially if they have antibacterial and antiseptic properties!
