Everything You Need to Know About Propolis
Posted by Rachel Ames onWhat is Bee Propolis?
Propolis, which is sometimes called bee glue, is a sticky substance made from resin that bees gather from trees and wax flakes which they store in their abdomen. They then form this into a ball and use Propolis to patch up their hive. This is also used as an antiseptic barrier to prevent the hive from getting contaminated.
What is the History of Propolis?
Propolis has been used by humans for medicinal purposes for thousands of years! Ancient Egyptians used Propolis in the mummification process and Ancient Greeks used it to treat wounds, abscesses, and ulcers. Even the Ancient Persians used Propolis for eczema and other ailments.
The word Propolis is reputed to have been coined by Aristotle, from the Greek words “pro” (before) and “polis” (city), meaning, “Before The City”, or “Defender Of The City”. With all Propolis does for the beehive, we can’t help but think it was aptly named.
Alongside enjoying the great effects of honey & milk baths, the gorgeous Egyptian Pharaoh, Cleopatra started using Propolis. This mystical and powerful ingredient was used during the embalming process, but it had so many more uses. Propolis was known for its preserving abilities and effective treatments, and she applied these traits to her skin.
With all these great qualities and history on our side, it's no wonder Propolis is one of Hey Honey's foundation ingredients!

What Are Some Skin Benefits of Propolis?
Propolis has many benefits, probably the most well-known benefits are it’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. This is why Propolis is used to treat acne and acne-causing bacteria. The anti-inflammatory properties make Propolis a great option for treating wounds and bug bites.
It also has the ability to ease inflammatory redness and other pigmentation irritations. This is one of the main reasons we think it’s so important to have Propolis in skincare, especially for those who naturally suffer from dry, itchy, red and/or flaky skin. Plus, Propolis is high in antioxidants which can help neutralize free radicals and oxidative stress, which causes your skin to age faster and can leave it more susceptible to diseases.
Propolis helps to jumpstart the production of Type I (found in the skin, tendons, and ligaments) and Type II collagen (found in the cartilage in the proteoglycans). Due to the boost to the collagen, Propolis may aid in wound healing and help it to heal faster plus, it has antibacterial properties, so it’s the perfect mix for aiding in your wound recovery.
